Well I did some arena PvP with such a character and found it pretty fun...seems to be a well rounded character: able to do decent damage, some defense, and definitely can do caster interruption: in one match, I absolutely shut down an enemy monk for the whole match, which was quite entertaining. For arena-style PvP, a pure caster interrupter is a gamble since you need to have good healing support and various other functions (tank) which may not be available on the team-of-the-moment. I didn't fool with pets or traps, so can't comment on this aspect of the build.

I would think this type of character would be valuable to an organized team: traps, secondary damage dealer or caster interrupter are very solid parts of many good team builds.

This should be a solid character for PvE, but to be honest, I haven't tried it in PvE yet.

Ranger/Mesmer is possibly the best class combination for a ranger primary that exists. You can interupt your foes and make all around hell for anyone stupid enough to try and kill you. Or if you'd like, you can just slap massive health degen on them using conjure phantasm.

In my experience the Ranger/Mesmer is as close as you can get to a single class character with the dual profession system. Rangers deal consistent damage, and Mesmers have hard shutdown with their hexes, but otherwise the two classes are fairly similar - energy denial, interrupts, and generally being a pain for casters.

Consequently the Ranger/Mesmer is one of the most narrow characters in the game. On top of that, those things that a Mesmer secondary would normally add, the hexes, are way too energy intensive for a character running on Expertise - spending 10-15 energy and 2-3 seconds on a single hex is completely unacceptable.

That said, the class combo is fairly good at shutting down casters (though not as good as a Mesmer primary) and does decent damage. It's not a particularly deep class combination that you can switch up often, but there are certainly some good builds in there.

Peace,
-CxE

I was looking for someone that played Ranger/Mesmer!

From the start I was wanting to make a Ranger/Mesmer character, and it seems that I would have made a great choice, so I'm happy now

I'm glad to hear from others that this works well. I just finished changing my build from Rng/Ele to a Rng/Mes and I think I'm all set to go.

I like the Ranger/Mesmer combo, especially Sauselestus Rex's Pirate King build.

Or, as an alternative, you can go for energy thefts to sustain your combat duration availability. Allowing you to consistently (with a little foresight) send out attacks. (Marksman's wager could then be switched for say barrage because the energy stealing is from alternative source.)

Oh, and Cronos? hehe... just a note... that is Shrapnel Magnet's build not S.Rex's. Rex published it for him. ( I got to give the props where they belong )

Either the R/Me or R/Mo. Both are perfectly viable and functional PvE builds that work. Whether something gets torn up in commentary or not, there still resides your own personal tastes and experiences. You need to experiment and learn the options within the different combos yourself before you jump too far into either group.

I've used both in PvE builds. Is there a better choice overall? NO. Is there possibly a preference to me? Not really. Why? You have to decide just how you are approaching said character. If you are worried about life and whatnot,..go Monk secondary and utilize some healing skills..or utilize some smiting skills for additional damage.

If you are worried about energy? Go Mesmer secondary and build up some energy theft skills to supply you with more than you need...or switch over to domination/ illusion to throw some nasty offhand damage/interupts at your foes.

Just have to decide which way you would prefer it. They both are excellent compliments if you know what you're doing. (and how do you know.. you ask?...you give them a trial run....if you don't like them..go get something else and keep doing that until you find your happy gaming combination style character.)

EDIT : (below) Yup he is experienced. Still doesn't mean he's always right. Just means he's right for his own preferences. Just like I am with mine and you are with yours. Personal tastes. there is no substitute or better than that to be found. Not to mention, you might be a little surprised to find out just what I do know about how to do things in my own way too.

Mesmer is the worst of the Ranger subclasses for PvE. Yes, that includes Warrior, which at least has stuff like Shields Up! and Watch Yourself! as defense.
Ensign said that... and he is an experienced player... i think lol

Yeah, I said that - I'm really not too fond of the Ranger/Mesmer at all for PvE. PvP? Like it a good deal better there, if you simply want to devote a single character to caster hunting. It's a damn good character for soloing Monks.

But for PvE? Doesn't really add much that other classes don't do better, especially at higher levels. I can see loving Conjure Phantasm in the part of the game where Conjure Phantasm is good, and some energy management would be nice before Expertise starts to kick in at level 16 or so - but at high level? I guess it's kinda amusing because enemies cast through Backfire, but I wouldn't get excited about that at the low levels you can afford on a Ranger - plus cast time, plus energy...Sympathetic Visage? Meh. Call me unimpressed. Certainly not impressed enough to give up a Monk, Necromancer, or Elementalist secondary.

Tricks only go so far - when you're fighting bots there's an awful lot to be said for just smashing face.

Peace,
-CxE

For PvP, I found the Mesmer secondary an excellant combination. You could create a hell full of misery for caster opponents very effectively.

For PvE, I'd rather go with "pure" ranger and then rearrange my build later for PvP. There's not really much you can do because most NPC opponents don't use a whole lot of spells. They just run up and beat the crap out of you. Conjure Phantasm is good for a while, but then it just becomes a waist of energy... I can't really think of anything useful and efficient for dealing damage on mobs in PvE.

But again, it's great for PvP. And my favorite combination.

Barrage, with and without Tiger's Fury, is indeed incredibly effective in PvE where you'll find a lot of tight packs. That's a pure Ranger combination, though - secondary is irrelevant. If you really want to maximize your damage this way, grab an Elementalist secondary for Conjure Element to add damage to each arrow, or run with a smiting Monk and do the same thing.
